Red Barn in Snow

This small canvas, painted last fall as a cover for some special Christmas cards I send out to family and friends, seems appropriate for January as well. The barn stands near my father's home in West Virginia.

Joshua Tree #10

After a long hiatus, I have started painting again. I suffered a personal loss in January that took away my creative desires until recently. About a month ago I forced myself to add some finishing touches onto a canvas I began last December. It was the breakthrough I needed, and last weekend I completed six small landscapes on canvas. Today I am heading back into the studio to work again.

The featured work is from my Joshua Tree series. "Joshua Tree #10." Oil on canvas, 22 x 36 inches. Completed January 2017.

A year ago I began a series of works based on my visit to Joshua Tree National Park (California) in 2011. This diptych, created by using two 18x18 canvases, is the second piece from that series. To date I have completed a total of nine canvases in the Joshua Tree series.

Joshua Tree #1

This canvas was the first in a series of paintings I created last year based on my visit to Joshua Tree National Park in Fall 2011. The park is located in the southern region of the Mojave Desert, just east of the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs, California. I had never really seen a desert before, and I was totally captivated with its beauty and remoteness.

"Joshua Tree #1." Oil on canvas, 30 x 40 inches. Completed July 2015.

Structure and Light: Delaplaine Exhibit Opening

My two-person show with Washington, D.C. artist Tinam Valk opened this past Saturday, April 2 at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center in Frederick, Maryland. Our exhibit is entitled "Structure and Light" and features 18 of my paintings. The opening reception was attended by approximately 90 people, and I sold six paintings that afternoon. I’m honored to have one of my canvases, “Fourth and Montgomery,” selected as the cover art for Dr. Timothy Hinton’s new philosophy book “The Original Position,” published this month by Cambridge University Press. I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Hinton for this fabulous opportunity.

Christmas at Oak View

This is a painting I completed in October depicting the main farmhouse at Historic Oak View County Park here in Raleigh NC. It seems a most appropriate image to use as my holiday greeting to family, friends and patrons. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year 2016!

The Winter Show at Greenhill

Last Sunday the Gallery at Greenhill in Greensboro, NC opened its annual Winter Show to the public, after having held a Collector's Choice gala fundraiser in the exhibit the night before. This year I was one of 120 North Carolina artists invited to exhibit work in the show, a great honor for me. I chose to include "Looking North on Water Street" (above painting on the left) and "On the Beach" (above painting on the right), two works completed as part of my Block Island series of 2013-2014.  I visited the show this past Tuesday and learned that "On the Beach" had sold at the gala. The exhibition will continue through January 15, 2016. The Gallery at Greenhill is located at 200 North Davie Street in Downtown Greensboro (

House on the Curve (Block Island XII)

It's been a few months since my last blog post. After a very hectic start to this year, my professional world has calmed down and I once again have both the time and energy to devote to studio pursuits. In fact, I've made some important changes in my life that will allow me to pursue this avocation with a greater passion. I've very excited about that prospect.

This canvas was the final installment in my 12-painting series based on a vacation trip to Block Island, Rhode Island in the fall of 2013. It was recently featured in a show I had at the Wake County Justice Center in Raleigh, NC.

"House on the Curve (Block Island XII)."  Oil on canvas, 24 x 36 inches. Completed July 2014.
